'85 T/A repaint-bodykit
I have owned my '85 Trans Am for over 20 years and it is time for a repaint. It has the first year redesigned body kit that was so popular. My question is regarding the side skirts/molding. Should they be removed and if so how should it be done? Is there a proper procedure for prep and paint leaving the molding in place? I would appreciate any advice. If I am going to put the time and effort into the job, I want it done correctly.

Are you referring to the body side molding??If so,they can be removed and replaced with new ones,or they can also be painted over.I'm guessing your molding is black.

If you are referring to the ground effects, yes they should be removed. They have metal brackets that hold them to the body. The nuts are inside the fenders. Some people paint over them while still mounted to the body, but the proper way is to remove them. Also it will give you an opportunity to examine for rust under those pieces.
