Are hatches interchangeable?

I've got an 86 T/A. There might a hatch locally available for cheap as a spare, from a Camaro, year unknown. Are they the same - either glass + body panel, or at least the same glass?

Re: Are hatches interchangeable?

'82 to early '84 have a hook style latch rather than the pins the later tops use. I believe that there are two sizes of latch pins also. Should be able to change the latch plates that go with the tops if the pins are different.

Sorry, are you referring to t-tops? I'm asking about the rear hatch.

Re: Are hatches interchangeable?

It should work. They are the same glass/decklid for just about all years, but what I have noticed is over time, body flex can affect fitment. For example. I wanted to replace the glass on my car, with a nice, never tinted rear glass. I swapped over my decklid since it was all painted and matched the car. Installed the glass, and it rubbed on one quarter panel. I marked all my bolts, everything went back together smoothly, but it just didn't fit right. My advice is make sure you really want to do it. Because that thing weighs a ton, and doing it by yourself is not going to be fun. That being said, if you have more time to mess with adjustments and what not it might work out better for you than it did for me. I still plan on trying it again.

Re: Are hatches interchangeable?

Cool, thanks! I might look into it then - just noticed that a vendor here in town was selling one. I don't actually need a replacement atm, but - that huge piece of glass has always freaked me out a little. If it ever got broken I'd otherwise be pretty hard put to locate one over here, and the cost to import one would be prohibitive.

Just keep in mind you may have some work to do filling and/or drilling holes in the decklid if you swap between the Camaro hatch and Bird hatch. Most of the time, the spoilers are different along with high mount brake lights (if equipped).

Re: Are hatches interchangeable?

Yeah, the HMSL would be an issue (got the 86), would need to find a way to make that work. Also removed the spoiler years ago, had the vinyl aerowing one which split to hell like they all do apparently.

Beggars can't be choosers though, if it fits the big hole at the back of the car, it's good

Re: Are hatches interchangeable?

Well, in that case (I didn't read your info, sorry), you'd be best off looking for one from a later car with the light under the glass, even though the lights don't work most of the time. Otherwise, you will need to extend the wiring for the HMSL to the trim panel covering the hatch motor and get a contact block to go with it for the Camaro spoiler with the brake light or a Bird spoiler with the light. Other than that, the hatches are physically interchangeable. The hatch that was on my 88 was from an 86, and got swapped with the one that was on my 87.

Re: Are hatches interchangeable?

Yes, you would need to fill a bunch of holes you no longer need and add others that the replacement spoiler needs...
