Is my steering wheel gonna fall off?

I've got about 2-3 inches of vertical play in it, and now it started making a creaking noise, like maybe it's rubbing against the plastic housing right by the ignition. I know the exact problem, it's because the bracket for the tilt control is loose, but I don't have a wheel puller available to me right now. Is there any way it will actually come off, or did GM design it a little better then that? Thanks ahead guys.

There's a nut holding on the steering wheel, and a clip in case the nut works loose. That should give it enough grab on the splines that it won't "fall" off, even with a jerk on the wheel. But I'd take a look at it quick since you'd literally be holding your life in your hands.
