rear hatch lid

I just recently purchased a 89 IROC Z. And the power latch for the rear lid is not working. It was when I got the car, but after shutting the lid a little hard, the latch mechanism seems to be to far down and will not slide back up. The power latch button still activates the latch but the move up and down to loosen or tighten. Any remedies out there???????

Go to a junkyard and get another one, or do what I did and take it apart and find out what the problem is. Chances are the gears are stripped. Also check to see if it's getting power (the power lock/unlock is completely seperate from the power pulldown)

Before you go to the junkyard try adjusting it by loosening 3 bolts that hold the motor down, play with it until you get it right.

Ken,

It may be as simple as locating and actuating one of the switches at the hatch pulldown mechanism. It's hard to describe, but to the rear of the mechanism there is a switch which if pushed down, will cause the unit to move back up into place. It may be hard to see if the 'dust brushes' on top of the mechanism are in the way. It is not obvious that it's a switch, you have to poke around until you find it.
