strut tower rust

Picking up a 88 iroc tomorrow. here is the link http://kansascity.craigslist.org/bar/3320393168.html

Now keep in mind that I haven't seen the car in person yet, but if any of you with experience in this could look at the under hood pic in the post and tell me what you think about the rust on the drivers side strut. I know that there are a ton of variables without looking at it in person, just trying to gauge an idea of what I might have to do for repair. Any info or tips would be great. Thanks in advance!

Re: strut tower rust

Wow! That's in much better shape than mine! I have rust everywhere and much worse that what I am seeing here. Even so, it's pretty easy to fix with a little know-how and time. I'd say go for it!

The rust looks like its just on the upper strut mount, and doesn't look pitted. 3 bolts hold it on after removing the strut. Just sand and repaint the one you have if its not that bad, grab one from a donor car, or buy an aftermarket replacement set.

But you should really get underneath the car when you're there and look for any other spots.

Re: strut tower rust

No worries there, that car looks clean. As mentioned, it looks like only the strut mount has some surface rust. I'd be more concerned with the usual trouble spots, like the floors.

I'd say that's not a deal breaker. If it was me, I'd just take it off and repaint it. And it does look like there's a small amount of rust on the strut tower itself, though minor. Again, I'd just sand that while the mount is off and hit it with some color matched spray.

Re: strut tower rust

Well after driving 5.5 hrs each way, I went to go look at the car only to find out it had been terribly misrepresented. Need body work and things replaced that added to be not worth it. What a waste of 11 hrs and $250 in gas.

Yah glad I went to look at it for sure. Makes me so leary of buying one sight unseen. There just aren't any decent ones close to me and driving all over God's green earth in my gas sucking truck really isn't a option.

At least you know you tried, you checked it out and that car will never haunt you again.... On to the next one. Seek and you will find one. In my recent quest to find one as well, I was amazed at how many are just completely "mauled/ragged" out.
