light dimmer swithc

The other night I went to turn my bright lights on and the switch is broken. There is no resistance there at all, what do i need to fix this problem?? what is broken??

Im my 91 firebird, there was a rod that went from the turn signal arm to a shaft that ran down the steering column to a switch. It would probably be easy to fabricate one. I just mounted a floor dimmer switch as per the tech article, and I find it to be a much better option. It was a very easy job too.
