Cleaning Gauge Faces

I purchased a 145 speedo and 55K tach for my '88 IROC and the tach looks like it has been sitting out in the open for a quite awhile as it has a build up of grime on it.

So the question is... If you clean the face with water and a cloth, will the numbers rub off or will they survive intact. I know that on some older gauges, the paint used won't survive a cleaning (ruined a nice '63 Nova cluster that way years ago). What I don't know is if our Camaro gauges are that way or not, and don't want to ruin an otherwise good cluster by experimenting.

I would first try a spot on the speedo, like one of the blue kph numbers. If the number does not come off then you should be able to clean the tach with out any problems, which shouldn't be a problem anyway. Once you have them cleaned and ready to put in, as I did on my 86IROC, I went ahead and removed the kph numbers so the only thing left to read was the mph numbers. Looked a lot better in my opinion.

Hey, thats a great idea, except sometimes I drive up to Vancouver so I'd best leave the kph on there (or maybe I can plead "but officer, the sign said 110 and that is exactly how fast I was going" ). I tried a spot like you suggested, and everything stayed. The tach cleaned up perfect with a damp cloth and looks like new. Goes in tomorrow. Thanks.
