Carpet Color

Ok, here's my dilemma. I just got my '86 Firebird, and she's in great shape. Only problem is, i'm not all that hot on the red interior. I was wondering what is a good dye to use to change the carpet from red, to black. The carpet's still in awesome shape and I'd hate to go thru the pain of removing it and swapping a black one on. Any suggestions?

Unfortunatly (at least what I've tried) there is no spray dye that works/holds up really well on the carpet.

What about other types of dye, it doesn't need to spray on.... I'll work it in on my hands and knees if i have too! Suggestions?

I suggest you just do a complete interior swap. It will be less frustrating. Try and post your interior up for sale...or just try and trade it. Good luck.

I suppose you could use a cloth dye like you would on clothing, but I think that has to be rinsed afterwords, I've never dyed clothing personally so I can't say for sure. If that did work, the carpet would still have to come out (the work you're trying to avoid) to rinse it (if that's the case). Not awfully positive what the carpet is made from but, if it's a nylon type material, I don't know how well that would take to dye either, I know stains seem to hold thier ground pretty good though.

The dyes that you use on cloth will not work on our carpets. The dye will darken the color a little bit but will mainly just run right off.

I have only done this to black carpet in a black interior, so take it at face value. There were some white spots in my carpet where someone had put something and it ***** down the carpet to almost nothing. i took some black spraypaint (with the seats out) and sprayed those spots, I worked it in with a cheep hard brissel brush. like a 4" x 2" brush works fine.

Might not cover Red great, but if your going to trash the interior anyway why not try a spot. sounds like more work than I would be willing to go through. I would buy new carpet from JC whitney or Classic Industries beore I spent that much time.
