So I finally got enough money to get my car painted and got it back home today (looks awesome, will post pictures soon) I removed everything (hood grills etc) and now when trying to put them back on they're having a hard time fitting. It's because the paint is in the countours and is pretty thick causing things to not sit in place. What would be the best way of correcting this?

pics would be helpful..can't imagine so much paint that would cause a problem with this..
I just left the garage so no pics for tonight. It definitely is the paint. I've tried sanding down the paint where the rivets are for the front grills and it did make it fit a bit better but I'm just wondering if there's a better method. Slightly scared I'm going to end up scratching around the area with all this sanding.
Edit: just to help describe it a bit better. Say if I was trying to pop one of the grills in, most of it fits but when I try to push it all down to go flush with the hood, there's one corner that will be poking up and I can't push down
