I thought mine had done that once, only it instead just didn't grab the hatch...when it pulled down without the hatch, it was in a lock position and the hatch wouldn't close. I had to apply pressur with a screwdriver between the two "mouths" (i'd call them) that grab the hatch, and the motor magically reingauged, bringing it up ready to close correctly...
Maybe your motor is fuc|<ed, but try this if you're not completely certain.

Yeah, from me. The gear nut and motor housing are also available from the dealer. Many have asked that I stock them in addition to my nylon replacement guide kits. GM never assigned a p/n for the hatch guides. Therefore replacements were not available. GM prefers to sell you the entire hatch pull-down assy for around $400. I have the gear nut in stock. My next shipment of motor housings arrives later this week. I custom reinforce them with thin strips of aluminum and plastic epoxy in the two areas where it commonly cracks and breaks. I manufacture and stock replacement nylon guides for the hatch pull-down assy. In the meantime, determine what is wrong with yours. These three items are the common failures of these hatch pull-down assemblies. E-mail me if you are interested in any of these items. Lon

The early hatch pulldowns up till 91 1/2 have a plastic switch in the latch opening that is pressed down when the hatch is latched... if you press it down with a finger or screwdriver the motor goes down, when you release it, it should come up. You may want to push it down and let the motor go all the way down, then let it come back up before spending money on a repair the car doesn't need.

Same thing happened to me. I was just fooling around one day, and found this switch and when I hit it, the motor raised up.

thanks for the help people. got pissed off at prices and tore the whole thing apart. good thing to i found the plastic gear that does the pull down had a flat spot in it where the worm gear rides and i found those missing teeth in the grease. went to the dealer and got the part for 3.00 ordered two one for however many years from now when it happens again. part of the problem that caused this was the hatch was ****ed to one side. the nuts at the glass were loose. tightend them up and then readjusted the hatch and pull down *** . all works fine now. thanks again nativ.
