92 Formula 5 speed Restoration Stage 1

For those of which have kept up to date on my posts. I had multiple potential buyers lined up and wanted to buy it, but none of them ever worked out. So I had one that was going to come pick it up. And I realized this feeling I have never felt like depressed, sad, and feeling of like loosing something. I then realized I would highly regret selling it and BOOM. The sentimental attachment kicked in hardcore out of nowhere, and motivated me to start repairing the rust yes. But for me asking 800 bucks temporarily that's practically nothing I have so much time and money invested in this car I would of been taking a huuuuuge loss. And I know I'm trying to save for a house but in the mean time im doing the floors. The house can wait. This is technically my 1st car I ever cared for and the sentimental attachment is to the sky. I cant belive it took nearly selling it for me to realize it after 8 years lol. So I'm putting up pics of the progress here are the floors drivers side has seen better days. lol I cant believe I'm kind of excited about this and motivated. lol you guys have any tips or input feel free to post. I know a lot of you are going to say its not worth it don't do it. Its worth it to me lol. So I guess all I can say is "And so it begins the restoration of Gloria my formula" lol

Nice job on deciding to keep the car! I haven't been able to drive mine for about a month and a half now because im swapping the L03 for an LT1 but it has absolutely sucked! How much rust is there that you need to fix?

Well im sure more will reveal itself but the floors, wheel wells and quarters. I just took the interior out and im ordering the floors. It will be under the covers for a while hoping to have the floors and quarters and wheel wells done before winter. This will be the first winter it wont be stored outside. It will be in a climate controlled place if my friends dad hasn't filled it up already lol. But i will say one thing it would be really nice to have a plasma cutter right about now, so I don't have to go through so many cutoff wheels lol.

Whats wrong the the toilet bowl injected 5.0 L03 lol. That a cheetah can run faster then it. lol Good luck the LT1 is a strong *** engine and produces good hp just make sure you do that **** to the opti spark so if your water pump does leak that it doesn't leak on it. I respect the fact your doing that swap because everyone including grandmas are doing ls1 and ls2 swaps and everyone is forgetting about the good old Lt1.

But take a pic of those floors you got you have both sides and send me a pic,how cheap are you talking I probably know what your going to say. "Make me an Offer" lol and you do know your quite a distance from me lol But I am soooo happy I have chose to do this. I finally have a project. When I get off work I watch the velocity channel everyday all those restoration shows makes me think. lol

Yikes.. even a $100 flux core welder and no experience would be better.

Its funny you say that, because i own a $200 flux core welder and know how to weld but I started to weld but the welder I have on the lowest setting was burning right through the floor and new metal, and when I did put a good tack on it, it would break. Garbage welder in my eyes. so I riveted it all in. Got tired with it burning through. Im confident in this job. But like I said I do everything mechanical im not a body man, as you can clearly see. It looks like something out of mad max but im confident in it, its very strong. If I don't like it in the future I can take off the primer and undercoating off and weld it in place. What is this not safe or something guys.

You can use a flux welder, it takes practice to do sheet metal. I have done it and I suck.

I did my floors and fender

https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/body...one-wrong.html

Watch this video it is great. Just hammer the sections nice and flat and together and weld away.

Very informative video I will be welding the floor on the drivers side, as soon as it gets shipped here but I will definitely use his tips thanks for the video good sir. Its just so hard to weld such thin metal. I will have to practice before I weld the floors in.

Yes, practice on scrap metal. You need real small gauge wire for thin stuff.
Just spot weld and skip around it until you make it all the way around.

Re: 92 Formula 5 speed Restoration Stage 1

Yeah welding the sheet metal on 3rd gens and old foxbodies is tough. Did patch panels on the quarters of an 89 fox and it was a b*itch! The metal is way too thin unlink the old 60s cars. So I've converted to fiberglass since then! And yeah I love the lt1 motors for what they are.. Finishing up the wiring and heads can swap and hopefully it'll be on the road soon enough.

LOL its soo ironic because someone needs that floor lol I knew you shouldn't of scrapped it and you knew it as well lol. But its good. So I will do my best with welding the new floor in I promise there will be no rivets used this time. I will make you guys proud. See to me I felt like that was acceptable for patching the floor, but as im finding out that's like really low quality work, so I will be going back and putting some spot welds on it. My co workers have been asking me hows it going with the floors and I showed them pics and there jaws were dropped. Saying was that you who used all those rivets and who did that or was that someone in preschool who patched the floor lol . So I must fix this mistake. But the driver floor came in the mail the box is almost as big as my Honda lol.

ok I spot welded in the passenger rear like I should have from the start worked really good actually lol may not look like top dollar but it does the trick. And the Floor is out of the box and is half the size of my Honda, heres the proof lol the fun begins on the floor right now lol

Re: 92 Formula 5 speed Restoration Stage 1

End of restoration. Upon a day ago cutting out the remains of the floor on the drivers side. Where your feet go is rotted through the firewall. Further inspecting found. That is rotted through the strut tower, if I push it, it will go right through. Should of looked there first. So after again and again of much thought. Looks like my project has come to an end. The Midwest has claimed another F body. I have shipped the drivers side floor back to the parts place I bought it from. Im sorry folks to leave you disappointed. I was just as sad. So yes folks thought I would keep you updated.

very sorry to hear

I have an 85 firebird, t-top car with about 300,000 miles on the chassis...it's lived in Missouri all it's life, and dealt with being a daily driver for most of that. I drove the car from my junior year of HS, through college and into my first job and finally put it into "weekend duty" around 2008.

Although the car has t-tops, I feel very lucky that floor had MINIMAL rust (couple holes in the back floor, little surface rust on the front floor). I did have a rusted out strut tower on the passenger side, and I cut and welded new metal in there, and am currently working on a part of the wheel well under the heater core. I'm sure I'm bound to find more rust (besides the visible stuff on the body) but all in all, it could have been worse. Good luck in finding your next project car!!! And best of luck with it!

I'm glad to see your taking care of it. 300k miles is like damn near world record lol. Really is nice that your taking care of it. See the sentimental value is insane right lol .Its ok I gave it my best shot to patch it up. But its out of my league and out of my price range and unfortunately not worth it. Yea rust once it starts it hide and lurks everywhere. lol
