ground effect emblems

Hi guys,

I have a question for some of you body experts. The ground effect on the RH side of my 87 IROC Z28 is slightly separated from the body on the front end. I can see the two screws that attach it seem to go under the front IROCZ emblem. I want to get into them and re-tighten them, but I don't see how the emblem comes out.

Any advice?

Re: ground effect emblems

Emblem just pops out. Pry it off/out with a small flat blade screwdriver

Don't remove the emblem. You can't access them from there. You have to remove the splash shield in the wheel well and you'll see the 2 speed nuts behind the fender. Use an 11mm wrench to carefully tighten them( the studs break easily). The front ground effects have a metal plate inserted in them that the 2 studs are welded to. There is no "head" as such on those.

Re: ground effect emblems

I think only 91/92 was like that.

My 1988 camaro, and the 3 sets I just pulled off of a 1984 z28, 85 z28, 89 rs had 2 Phillips head screws in recessed holes behind the emblem

Re: ground effect emblems

I think mine is similar to what Night rider is describing. I was thinking that there might be nuts inside the fender, but only see the tips of 2 screws. I will work at the emblem again. Just don't want to f*** anything up. I am not a body man. I may even run it down to my buddy Carl at Newburg Auto Body and let him do it.

I'm already sad about the paint on the ground effects. I had them replaced soon after I bought the car in '98. The originals were fiberglass and broken. The GM replacements are plastic and came coated in primer, ready for paint. About two years after they were painted and installed, the primer began to pop loose bringing the paint with it. Now I have small a small area on the driver's side where the black plastic shows through. They'll have to be pulled, stripped down to plastic, primed and painted from scratch because the factory sucked at bonding the primer in the first place.
