Lexan T-top's

My 91' Camaro has the plastic T's on it, it looks like the one on the driver side is warped. One thing for sure the driver side leaks air while driving. The weather stripping is in mint condition. Did Chevrolet ever offer glass T's instead of the plastic? Can Glass T's be purchased or are they something that has to be found?

Glass tops were standard on 3rdgens up until 90 (I think) then they switched to squeeky lexan. I know that thelocking mechanism is slightly different in the newer cars, the pins have a "slit" in them. I think you may be able to swap the mech with the ones from your tops. I hope so 'cause I'm swapping my moms 92 lexan tops for glass ones

The lexan T-tops were first available on CC1 equipped F-bodies cars starting in '89. GM phased in the new T-tops on all cars produced with RPO CC1 around the 3rd week of March '89.

These T-tops were made of a plastic material called Lexan by the Lexamar corp.

Unfortunately, GM received so many "warranty" claims on these new T-tops that they decided to switch back to glass for the '90 model year. Many people reported that the lexan T-tops tended to craze, warp and crack due to sunlight exposure. Customers who filed a warranty claim on their "defective" lexan tops received glass replacements instead.

The lexan T-tops finally reappeared on all RPO CC1 F-bodies for the '92MY.

Can I purchase a glass replacement and just use the existing hardware? Or do I have to purchase the complete set-up? Where can they be purchased?

The T-top hardware can be used on either T-top; Plastic or glass. By '90, GM was using the larger "latch" pins of the the troublesome lexan tops on the glass tops a well. I'm not sure when GM converted to the larger pins and slightly revised latch assembly on the their glass tops, but I believe it as around the '88MY.

IMO, it would be better to score a set of glass T-tops at a wrecking yard than paying big $$$$ to have glass replacement panels put in. As long as the glass ones have the latch pins, large or small, and not the "finger" type latches of the early '82-'86(?) tops you should have no problem.

The replacement panels for the lexan tops have been discontinued by GM. They ran about $850 for each side. Plus, it was just the plastic panel. It still had to be installed on the existing T-top frame that has the holes for the latch pins and rubber moldings on it.

Your located in Rancho Cucamonga, Right? There's a wrecking yard called Rite-Way on Arrow Blvd that might have some good glass ones. In fact, that's were I found a pair of lexan tops (just needed some polishing) to replace my cracked originals.
