t-tops to hardtop??????
t-tops to hardtop??????
This might sound dumb, but I have an 86 Iroc and I have rebuilt the entire car, everything is new. The problem is I have T-tops and I HATE them!!!! It is now time for the body work and new paint job and I really want a hard top. Is it at all possible to have a new "top" from a hard top camaro welded on to my car??? Does this make sense, and if so is it possible?? How much would something like this cost. I want my car to be a hard top and DO NOT want to switch all of my stuff into a hardtop car. Please Help. I figure that if aftermarket companies can turn hardtops into convertibles and T-tops this might be possible. Thanks
Its possible, but not practical. It would probably be cheaper to buy a nice hardtop and swap the good parts over. If you don't like your t-tops because of the light getting through, then buy a set of t-top shades. If it is because of leaks, then get the seals replaced and the tops adjusted. Much cheaper than cutting the top, and t-top cars are more desireable come resale time. If you don't ever remove the tops once the seals are replaced, then it is unlikely you'll develop any leaks for a long time.
Really the only reason I don't like the Ttops is because they leak so bad. The car was repainted in 1996 and it appears new seals were put on the car, not sure about inside the ttops. I hardly take off the tops and the seals look like brand new. Is it possible the guy who put them on screwed something up??? This was done before I bought the car. When it is time to repaint should a good body shop know what they are doing and is there anything I should tell them to do so I have no leaks??? Thanks for the help.
Done right, t-tops won't leak. I had my '86 redone within the first year the car was new due to leakage, and they haven't leaked since. It took the dealership 2 trys to get it right though. A dealership may have more expertise in this arena due to years of warranty repair experience, but they wouldn't be the cheapest. If you get someone to do it, make sure they are willing to stand behind their work for at least a year, if they won't do that for you find someone else.

The t-tops can also be adjusted... i had an 88 GTA, which is now my parts car.... when the car ran, they never leaked, and after the accident, and sitting in a drive way for a year and a half, they still dont leak! Its all about the fine adjustments and good stripping!
