Hood stopped closing
Hood stopped closing
Okay so I just replace the hood struts the other day. When I bought the car the latch was always a bit temperamental when trying to open it. After doing some work today, it refuses to close. The latch will move when I push it around, it seems as though there is too much extra cable? I am not sure what the deal is. I know that before even when it would close it never seemed like it was closed well. I have attached some pictures of the locked and unlocked position and what the cable looks like. Thanks for the help guys!
Re: Hood stopped closing
The cable has nothing to do with why it's not latching. At least not unless it's stuck in the pulled position, which it's not in the photos.
First things first, you need to clean your hood latch. A couple cans of carb cleaner and maybe some scrubbing with an old toothbrush to get all the crap off of it. Then lightly grease the moving parts at their pivot points, and any contact points.
Too much grease is bad, because it'll attract dirt. Too little grease is bad, because without lubrication the parts won't move freely. The hood latch, door latches, hinges, locks, etc should be cleaned where necessary and lubricated on a regular basis.

thats exactly what I did drew, cleaned and scrubbed with carb cleaner and made sure the hood was aligned and it worked much better. I do need a new cable to open it as that one is extremely loose...but it works for now! Thanks!

Re: Hood stopped closing
If you put the latch at the lowest point (or too low), the hood will not close. If you haven't tried it yet, adjust it upwards. It doesn't take much, 1/16 too low is enough to keep it from closing.
The latch can also be a bit off side/side to cause issues, but the striker on the hood can realign that.
