Need Advice- Body Panel vendors
Need Advice- Body Panel vendors
I need some advice about hot rod replacement body parts. Who do you think is the best supplier of body panels?
I recently bought a 1968 El Camino (as a tow car for my Camaro). It needs new quarter panels. I bought a never-installed pair off a private owner on e-bay and am quite disappointed. He showed on his auction page where he had ordered them through Eckler's, so I thought that they would be quality parts. But when they came, they had a "made in Taiwan" sticker on them, crap! They seem to be pretty thin as well.
I was just at the Texas Motor Speedway GoodGuys show, and the vendors there told me that other than certain old Ford truck bed panels, you really weren't going to find American made parts anymore.
So I'm looking for opinions on body panel vendors. Who do you think has the highest quality pieces? AMD, Dynacorn, Classic industries, or somebody else? I was thinking that AMD might be a good choice, but they don't seem to make a lot of larger El Camino parts at this time. Help!

Junkyard for OEM parts from donor car or truck. May require a little more work but worth it.
The used IROC hood I got from Hawk's Motorsports worked out perfect after it was refinished and painted.
The L88 hood for my 72 vette from Ecklers fits almost perfect. My vette has never been hit. Some of how well parts fit is condition of the car or truck.
Put the vehicle on a frame machine and make sure it's straight. If it's tweaked and needs a pull nothing is going to fit.

I agree, that's a great idea. But you can't find any 1968 elkies' in any junkyard around here. Besides the normal wear and tear, crunches and metal worm, there really aren't any originals panels to be found that aren't roached out. This El Camino is 48 years old after all. And, Texas is a serious hail state.
