Re: self etching primer on aluminum

how much body filler?

will it be immediately primered? Or sit for a while?

if going to sit, id epoxy prime it, then do your body work when youre ready

etching primer has gone the way of the dodo bird, its old tech and really of no use, two part epoxy primer is best , its strong and it doesnt absorb moisture like other primers.

When I was working with Dupont self etching primer you could sand it, then put small amounts of glaze over it and reprime but you weren't supposed to use body filler over it if I remember correctly. I don't know about any other brand.

Self etching primer is far from obsolete, Its used almost exclusively in collision repair shops. It does absorb moisture but its purpose isn't to keep it out, thats the job of the topcoat.

Any repairs that are made in ANY shop that hits metal, needs to have etching primer sprayed before primer. And you don’t epoxy prime something unless that thing is guna sit for a while like most everyone’s builds. If you are actually working on it, etch primer, high build, block, repair hig/lows, high build primer, block, 2 mid coats of primer, wet sand, base, clear. Sand buff, or respray clear, sand buff.

No, you cannot use body filler over etching primer. The acid can attack the filler. Use epoxy, or filler then etch.

Re: self etching primer on aluminum

I've worked several restoration shops and a dealer collision center and No one used etching primer at all.

alot of 2k urethane primers have a etching agent in them and also are corrosion resistant i am fond of ppg ncp 271. but if you just want to protect it from corrosion for a period of time and are going to do any filler work on the part than go with an epoxy primer. bodywork over properly prepared epoxy primer is good, body work over etching or urethane primer no good.
