85-90 Firebird Aerowing Rear Spoiler 3rd brake light fit problem - mystery solved ??

Is the part that Hawks is using and the reason why so may have trouble with 3rd brake light?

12397143 - 1985-90 Firebird Aerowing Rear Spoiler - Formula/Trans AM/ GTA - Wrap Around

Aftermarket Aerowing style rear spoiler to give your 1985-90 Trans Am/GTA a stylish appearance. Manufactured in durable fiberglass. Each spoiler includes mounting hardware. If mounting on a car that did not come equipped with an aerowing spoiler, drilling of the rear decklid will be required to obtain proper fit. Comes in gelcoat and primer finish that must be blocked out, primed and final sanded prior to painting.

IMPORTANT: This spoiler is NOT designed to accept a factory third brake light. Spoiler will require modifications if you want to install a factory style third brake light beneath the spoiler.

ATTENTION: Do NOT paint this spoiler PRIOR to fitting it to the vehicle for the first time. Professional installers ALWAYS test-fit a spoiler to the vehicle first, conduct any and all necessary modifications, drilling of holes, etc. and then remove the spoiler from the vehicle to paint it as a final step. Once the fit and appearance of the spoiler on the vehicle has been tested and confirmed, then you can begin prepping, and priming the spoiler. FINALLY after all mods, and test-fitment has been completed, then you can proceed to the painting of the spoiler. Painting of body parts should always be the next-to-last step of the installation process.

Well that explains my problem that I had. I still dont have the 3rd brake light on.

And here I am thinking that Hawks made their own spoilers for our cars.

Well, I don't know. Was more a question, than a statement. Hawks is on their vendor list. But it would explain why we are seeing issues.

Get the one from Hawks. I just bought it back in June and its ready for top coat. To fit the 3rd brake light I had to sand down the top of the plastic housing, where it curves. Take your time and you will get it to fit. It also has the mounding threads for the housing. I have no regrets buying their spoiler. Plus its very light! Your rear window will shoot up if you have new shocks on it. But I could not be happier. Check out my 1989 Formula 350 restore thread under body. I have some pics there.

hawks carries alot of OER parts (door sills, wheels, etc) but unless they changed to the spoiler it didn't use to be a OER part. My Fiberglass one is from the company that first started to make these in fiberglass in the late 90's.
