Lower Door Hinge Detent Roller/Pin for 1992 Camaro

I'm trying to replace the detent roller without taking the fender/door/hinge off the car. If I cut the old detent roller pin in half, shouldn't I be able to slide the bottom out of the hinge and the top out of the top side of the hinge, and just put in a new roller/pin assembly? I've read that some people put in a new pin and then tac weld it on the bottom of the hinge, but I'd rather use something that has like a C or E clip on the bottom of the pin as I don't have a welder. I keep seeing kits where they want you to put the pin inside the roller and inside the hinge pin and then put that in the hinge, but I'd rather have the roller/pin assembly already together so that all I have to do is put the pin in the hinge and put the clip on the bottom of the pin. Does anyone know where I can find a roller/pin that's pre-assembled and comes with a clip?

I'm guessing they have it set up like that because the main shaft needs "pressed" in, because of the splines. If you push or tap on the small roller pin to drive in the main pin, it wil probably damage the roller bushing or squeeze the roller to tight. Unless the small pin can only go so deep in main pin.

Yes, you can cut it in half or grind off the swedged over portions of the pin on the bottom and drive it up.

You do have the little door spring out before you start, right?

Thanks. Yeah, I don't have one of the spring depressors yet, but I'm going to get one.

Those tools are the perfect example of how the right tool makes a job 1000 times easier. With the tool, removing the spring seems almost too easy.

Agreed on the spring tool. My drivers door was missing one. Had a replacement laying around for ages. Finally just bought the tool and had it installed in less time then it took to unbox it.

if your hinges are original, then you will not be able to push the new detent pin in the existing hinge. you will be installing the new hinge pin then the roller and roller pin. i had to use a press to get them installed.
