Red to gray fabric is impossible

I bought some red sun visors at the junk yard for ten dollars and have put at least ten coats of medium gray Duplicolor fabric paint on one and it isn't much closer to gray than before paint. Has anyone had any luck doing this? What paint did you use?

I can't see it working, grey, unless it's really dark is lighter then the original color red. Black would probably be the only way you could go
