Hatchback lift thingy....

I don't know if this is a relay switch or what....But I need another one I'm thinking. The hatchback won't latch. I've played with it....and I think the switch is bad....Does anyone know what the part i'm talking about is called? It's a little black rectangle "box" that the wires go into.
Thanks for any help.

There is a switch located in the slot where the loop from the hatch latches. The loop contacts that switch and causes it to lower the hatch pull-down unit. There is another switch further insde the unit which reverses the motor so it will rise when the loop is released. There is a relay (that little square black box you described) that is below the hatch pull-down unit and powers it. I can send you some scans of the HELM's manual which explains it all so you can diagnose and solve your problem. A couple of other problems to be aware of: The motor housing commonly cracks and breaks away from the frame of the hatch pull-down unit. The gear nut which is turned by the motor to raise and lower the latch portion can shread teeth and fail. Lastly, the injection molded guides are junk, made from the minimum amount of materila possible and break into several pieces. This prevents the proper alignment and creates problems with the latch portion raising and lowering. I stock the new housings, gear nut and guides. I reinforce new GM housings with 4 pieces of aluminum and epoxy in the area where they break. I manufacture the guides from solid nylon, so they are much stronger than the OEM ones (which aren't even available from the dealer). E-mail me if you find you need any of these items. The relay can be replaced at an auto parts store. Lon
