my original steering column is cracked open and the key won't turn over the ignition and the wiper switch is pretty much ****ed. the plastic shell is broken open to expose the back of the ignition switch. is something like this worth replacing or is it just cheaper to get a used one anywhere else?? I would think it would be more cost effective to get a used column,but I don't want some sloppy POS. is a thirdgen column worth repairing to conserve parts..or does it have any value to someone who may want to repair it?

man I have the same problem. was your car stolen? Mine was and they got in by pulling out the hatch lock. It's a bitch because these cars are easy to boost. I've been doing resto work and haven't got to the column yet but I have been wondering the same thing. I'd like to keep the original if possible. Hopefully someone here can give some advice.

There is actually a GM steering column rebuild kit available. I am not sure where but my brother's 1989 Silverado was stolen and they busted up the column pretty bad. He gave it to a friend who knew how to install the kit and when he got it back it worked and looked better than new. I think it cost him about $100. thanks for the input,yes the car was stolen. it was interesting because I could start it up with a big flathead and take it for a ride around the block until the cracked heads overheated the engine,now my heads are out along with the entire interior,steering column ect... I'm trying to get the money to install an alarm,roll cage,T-56,350 all while it's still apart,maybee even tow it to a body shop for a reconditioning....plus it's nice to clean out all the dirt that was hidden everywhere (So. CA car). I hear in africa,they have flame throwers and "bear traps" that cut peoples legs off when they try to steal the car! I'm not sure I'd want a fire in my car,but some car thieves bloody feet on my floor mat would be nice....as long as my car was still there.

I have a stick shift column on ebay now. It's cheap.
