1991 Trans Am Gound fx

I just bought a 1991 Trans am and was wondering if i could switch the ground fx to 85 to 90 style? I think they look alot better, Is this a bolt on swap, I was worried about the front and the headlight assembly.
Has anybody done this?
\Thanks

I think they will directly bolt on. The headlight mecs are similar. i would get the headlight asms when you snag the ground effects & bumpers etc don't forget the the paring lights & the driving lights and snag some wire with them to make sure there the right connection...

What color is your Trans Am? White? If they are in very very good condition I'd be interested in getting them along with the front fascia and rear fascia along with the door pieces. Do you have any pics? No rush.

Just wondering...no offense at all but if you don't like the 91-92 T/A and Firebird W68 styling GFX why didn't you buy a 90 T/A? I'm not trying to start picking on you....but hey whatever floats yer boat...I'm in need of some ground effects parts and bumpers....I know of a place that has some 85-90 GFX at a pick-a-part. Let me know how much you're willing to let those go for. Also I've seen a 91-92 with the front the same yet they changed the side and rear GFX to match those of the 85-92....I'd go either way.

thanks for replying,
yea my ground fx are white they do have a crack on the front driver side , the reason I bought a 91 instead of the 90 is because it had all the options i wanted, it had to be a 305 tpi, 5 speed and with t-tops, but it seemed all t-tops models i found were autos.

By the way in 91 & 92 the front fenders of the Trans Am were the same as the GTA, no air extractors. So if you do not mind it looking like a GTA, your good to go...

well...you know...

its just a GTA, thats all

Just messing with you... nothing is wrong with a GTA but there is that...

He said he wanted a Trans AM, and I was simply pointing out that the GTA had no heat extractors like the 91-92 Trans Am...

Well I hate to rock your bolt, but under your ground effects on your 91 TA is a long bracket WELDED to your rocker panel. You will have to somehow rip that off. But belive me its almost impossible taking it off without ruining your rocker panel. Belive me when I got some 91 TA ground effects I got everything off except those two brakets. ANd you cant really take them off with a Torch because you will set your car on Fire. Also if you do this you will have to buy the reinforcement bar or something that sits under the rear bumper cover. Because on the 91's I beleave the bottom bolts are lower and this wont be a direct bolt on.

You see I'm working my project now, and I'm actually putting those 91 GFxs on my 89 Firebird w/o gfxs. I had to go get those brackets from the dealer and were $96.99, yes that hurt. Plus its two of the right side. Its little diffrence, but I have to cut the bracket that will go on the driver side rocker. I plan on going with the 85-90 TA front end though with the little front GFXs for the front of the fenders. Hopefully I can finish my project bird soon, and get the baby painted.

Hope I could help you but personally I would stick with what you got.

LT1IROCZ,

I will tell you what, I will trade you even up for my 87 Formula with the T-tops, 5 Speed 5.0 TPI...

Would anyone happen to have a picture of one with 91-92 front but 85-90 side and rear GFX? If you do, please post it. Thanks.

Hey maverick, what are you talking about? I too have a 91 bird project car and I didn't have much trouble taking off the gfx. There is about 8 screws underneath, 3 or 4 on the ends and they are clampped with those metal brackets. Is that what you are talking about? Are they really that expensive?

It wouldnt look right... the pren 91 GFX have a bump before they meet the body, where the 91-up GFX are flush into the body... kinda hard to explain.

those brakets are welded on my friend, beleave me I was at the junk yard for about 2 hours ripping these ground effects off. I coulnd get the brakets off because they were welded. the 85-90 have the slotthings that slide in. The actual graound effects not the support brakets are what I'm talking about that are welded.
