86 rear discs

Hey guys, went to change my moms rear brakes and noticed the back of the pads did not line up with grooves or a slot on the small piston??? the rivets were all sheared and everything was wore crooked and lopsided!!! does this sound like a familiar problem? The calipers are rebuilt I know, could the pistons be in the wrong position??? Any help please... Thanks Allan

Welcome...I haven't messed with those older calipers in some time, but the pads have some cast "pins" in the back side of the inner pad, correct? If so, you have to screw the piston back in before you install the pads and those pins need to line up with the slots in the piston so they keep the piston straight as it moves out over time. I'd get a piston inserting tool at Auto Zone or the like and try screwing the piston back in and see if this helps.
