I thought I understood what I was going to need to do this swap but I read a few things today and now I'm not so sure I have everything I need. I have a 1986 posi rear 10 bolt with the crappy iron caliper setup, I got a 1996 LT1 rear end complete with the brakes that's totally grenaded inside just for the brakes. I thought all I had to do was pull the backing plates off of the 1996 rear and swap them onto the 86 rear end then mount the brakes. I originally was going to do this with my 9 bolt but I read that the backing plates won't fit the 9 bolt they're different, now I'm confused because I hear that the LT1 brakes are different than the 89 + 3rd gen brakes. I suppose this is a simple question and yes I've researched all this I'm not asking for alot here just verification that I CAN swap the backing plates to my 86 rear end and swap over the brakes.

Rear discs from '89 to '97 are essentially the same with minor differences in backing plates some other non important stuff. Have fun with your swap.
