ARRGG!! Brake cable length for 91 Firebird?
Hi Guy’s
I’ve been dreading the idea of having to change my rear brake shoes for years. After looking at all the levers springs and pin’s that are involved in their disassembly I’ve left it until the shoes are down to the rivets almost.
Anyway, the brake cables are also way past their best so I’ve decided to change the lot in one go, I’ve got all the shoes, springs wheel cylinders etc to do the change but I’ve hit a problem.
I’ve removed my old cables and found that the ‘’lucky find’’ one’s I got of fleebay are way longer than the ones I’ve taken off!
The one’s I’ve take off are about 51.5inch long and the new ones are 64inches!! Both boxes for the new cables say they are for Firebird, Trans-Am, and are Bendix parts C1551 and C1552.
I buy all my service parts for the car from Rock Auto, but looking at their site they too have cables that range from 51 to 65 inches!
From what I've found in searches is that there are a few different design lengths for all of the years.
Anyway, although I can get them to fit by re routing them over the diff I’d rather get your input before I spend the time fitting them only to have to take them off again. Can anyone tell me which ones from RockAuto WILL fit as it's doing my poor head in!
All the best, Speed.

Well these two are both 64'' and would be clearly much longer in fit than the ones I've taken off!

You can get the 91 and 92 rear cables at any parts store. The problem is getting the front cable from the lever because no one makes them. In 91 and 92 it's shorter so only that one will work.
That is a misprint you have one shorter than the other. My 92 RS has two different size cables.

I called a US parts importer here in the UK today and they said that the cables for my car are are 54'' (Right) and 64'' (left) which I find odd as the cables I've taken off are both 51''!! Go figure
By the way they didn't have either!! Welcome to the UK!!
Anyway, I think I might be able to route the (Much) longer ones safely, but will they work???
