steering wheel turns hard right when braking?

my mechanic friend is telling me he thinks this issue is being caused by the proportioning valve not working correctly. When I hit the brakes the steering wheel turns hard to the right. He had done a complete brake job on it and it still isn't working right. Before he did anything though, the brake penal would be spongy, and be harder to stop the car, but it would stop and be straight. What are your thoughts?

If the flex hoses weren't replaced, start there.

Could be an allignment issue. Check tire pressure of course. That's all I can think of.

Re: steering wheel turns hard right when braking?

The reason for pulling during braking is usually that you have one caliper that is 'grabbing' as soon as you apply the brake... this can be caused by a frozen caliper, but as stated above, your flex lines can suffer from internal delamination, which acts like a check valve and prevents backflow of fluid.

Check to see if the caliper piston can be compressed easily away from the rotor. If it can't, then disconnect the flex line, and try it again. Before doing so, take precautions against brake fluid shooting all over the place (it destroys paint, among other things).

If the piston compresses normally with the hose disconnected, you have proven that the flex hose needs to be replaced. On our cars, they are old enough that it doesn't really hurt to replace them as a precaution in any case.
