Thinking about c5 front conversion

My next task for my car is to upgrade the front brakes, now i already have a pair of c5 calipers and have looked through flynbye's catalog but i'm pretty confused as to everything required for the swap.

i am running 17 inch wheels so i'd plan on trying to use at least a 13in rotor, and i know the spindles need to be modified, but what else is needed?

and has anyone attempted the spindle modifications themselves? the $500 they seem to cost on flynbye seem ridiculously expensive, and i'm a pretty decent fabricator, just haven't gotten to go to the junkyard and get some spindles to mess with.

any help with this would be awesome, thanks

Re: Thinking about c5 front conversion

not sure what 500 kit you are looking at, but its probably all inclusive, you add rotors and calipers.

the stock rotor/hubs need to be cut down into just hubs for the c5 rotors to slip onto, and have longer studs installed.

Flynbye used to offer to modify your spindles for about 100 bux, you ship them there and back.

Parts list?

Modified spindles
Modified rotor/hubs
C5 caliper adapter bracket
c5 calipers, abutments and pads
c5 rotors
flex lines

pretty much it.

I havent modified spindles, but i will be attempting to do so in the near future. Its not a very hard procedure, but you have to drill out and tap the dust sheild holes in the spindle, and those holes need to be straight.

Re: Thinking about c5 front conversion

I modified my own spindles using a portable bandsaw and 1/2" drill. I marked the erea to cut off with some tape first. drilled and tapped the holes for the bracket. I made my own bracket but would buy one now since there only $50. I must admit that I was worried the first time I did this so I purchased a set of spindles from a local salvage yard and modified them. This is a inexspensive upgrade a well worth the little effort to do. I am also running the 13.4" front rotors on 17" wheels and it just clears.

so is the stopping power noticable, big differance? and if you had to put a price on all the needed parts, what would the ball park total be?

Re: Thinking about c5 front conversion

braking is much improved over stock. anything is really

cost, i pieced my c5 setup together for just under 500 bux IIRC. Shop around, deals pop up front time to time in the classified and on ebay as well as other sites.

Re: Thinking about c5 front conversion

well i came across what i think is a deal, but just havent done all the research to realy know if it is one or not. thats what im doing now lol. and its roughly around 550 for i believe everything. i just dont know what is to be fabricated to my spindles. do you have to cut them, or trim them, drill them? i have no problem doing so, just need to know what it is thats needed. and is the rear conversion compatible with already disc brake rearend, or is suppose to be adapted from a drum rear?

Re: Thinking about c5 front conversion

so all you need to do is drill and tap some new holes for the brackets?

i'll look more into the prices of hubs on flynbye and try to find some rotors on ebay.

thanks

yes, 2 of the dust sheild holes need to be drilled and tapped larger, then cut the old caliper mounts off.

Re: Thinking about c5 front conversion

The conversion is pretty easy and does show it on the road. It also fills in the wheel and gives it a better stance. I too have done the swap and compiled what I did, then through it on you tube for viewing. You can catch it at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M_hkuxcCqqE . Copy and paste on the www tab. The cost can be kept down if you know how to fab or know someone who can? But anyhow, good luck on your choice as I know I enjoyed mines.
