LS1 brake swap

Ive been contemplating an ls1 brake swap on my 1988 camaro, I thought it was a fairly "bolt-on" mod, but then while i was doing some research i saw a thread where someone had cut the hub to put another on, among other things. I thought if you replaced the spindle it would fit, just made the backspacing for the wheels different (to fit 4th gen wheels).

Can someone explain this conversion a little better to me please?

Re: LS1 brake swap

our cars have the hub and disc integrated into a single unit, LS1 discs are separate from the hub, so you need to take a stock third gen disc and have it machined down so that the rotor hat fits inside the Ls1 disc

To mod things yourself.....
Hub:http://lukeskaff.com/?page_id=369
Spindle:http://lukeskaff.com/?page_id=396
Caliper bracket:http://lukeskaff.com/?page_id=355

Refer to this:http://lukeskaff.com/?page_id=329 before starting. I only gave you the very basic info links above.

Or go to (my opinion for a bolt-on kit):http://www.bigbrakeupgrade.com/ to buy a 100% bolt-on kit. There is another supplier that people may suggest buying from, but from what I have seen is LONG waits & virtually no communications unlike bigbrakeupgrade.com who I hear nothing but good things about.

scott from bigbrakeupgrade is a real cool dude, he modded my spindles and I bought the modded hubs and brackets from him as well. Probably the most helpful vendor I have ever dealt with

Re: LS1 brake swap

Unless your a competent machinist/fabber I wouldn't try it myself without a kit from someone. I did all of it myself but my Dad is a very skilled machinist and has a well equipped machine shop so it was a piece of cake for us.

With that said it feels like 20 gorillas grab hold your car when you get on the brakes with the ls1 setup. It's a tremendous improvement over stock and IMO is a excellent safety upgrade. If you ever have had to make a "panic stop" with the stock brakes you'll know what I mean.

It can be done well by anyone without the use of a drill press or special vises. Provided you have the right approach. I have made two complete LS1 sets and I would bet that the bolts mounting the bracket to the spindle are 90* +/- 1* My bolt holes are not ovaloid and the bolts go in with absolutely no wobble/play.
