Maybe yours was produced early in the run, and they were trying to use up older parts. There's a vin break in 1991 firebirds (built in 1990) where they stopped using an older style electric rear hatch pull down and went to a newer style. The vin on my car says I should have the newer style. Guess what? I have the older style.

My car is an 88 model year but has the older style coolant overflow reservoir that 'stopped' at 87.
