I don’t know how to condense this into a short post..., 3,223 h.o. 305 V8 camaro Z28s were produced for 1983. All with the borg-Warner T-5. This particular car came with a dual snorkel air cleaner, fiberglass hood, dual electric cooling fans, and 3:73 positrac rear. T-Tops, perfect grey interior and black exterior with red and silver accents rounded it out. My dad bought this car new. Realized that it didn’t make a good family car and sold it two years later. Fast forward to 1991 and dad had a cop friend track the VIN# and it just so happened to be for sale in LOUISIANA. he bought it back and then the restoration/modifications began. Skipping forward a bunch, the car now has an all aluminum Donovan 400 SBC using a large journal steel 327 crank, 6.200 eagle rods and custom 4.155” pistons for a total displacement of 352c.i. Refer to the article written by Smokey Yunick entitled “the 350 that Chevrolet should have built “. Add on top of the Donovan block Brodix track 1 aluminum heads, custom hydraulic roller crane cam, 1.5/1.6 comp full roller rockers and a custom ported Edelbrock Performer RPM intake. Carburation is still pending But entire fuel system is run with Holley parts including electric fuel pump and regulator. A Tremec TKO 600 (and hurst T-handle shifter) replaces the original 5-speed and has been connected directly to the unibody via a BMR relocation torque arm. Additional chassis enhancements include a BMR Tubular Crossmember, welded subframe connectors, and Art Morrison tubular a-frame (chrome) front suspension with Lakewood 70-30 struts and wilwood drag brakes. Electric enhancements for the engine include a GM performance parts serpentine system including new compressor, power steering pump and one wire alternator. A new Fluidampr balancer is installed alongside a new aluminum Edelbrock water pump and MSD high torque starter. Ignition system includes a MSD Distributor and 6AL BOX. Exhaust system includes JET-hot black ceramic coated hooker super comp headers into a mufflex 4”single exhaust into a 4” flow master muffler. Rear end has been rebuilt with new bearings, seals, 4:11 Eaton posi and certified axles with hardened studs installed and topped off with factory aluminum drums. A center Force dual friction clutch and nodular iron flywheel make shifting the TKO 5 speed a true joy. The body is ridiculously straight with absolutely no rust and paint was redone awhile back and is near show quality. A good polish could make it literally perfect. I don’t have the patience to keep adding details here. This is possibly the finest modded early 3rd gen on the planet. The stumbling block for us has been adapting the old wiring harnesses to the new parts. All original wiring is still in place. That makes this car 97%complete. Elderly Parents are about to move and don’t want to deal with finishing this build. We still have a photo album documenting a lot of the work. Receipts are also available. PM for more info.
