Kid with his first camaro

hey I joined the forum a little while ago but this is my first post. im 16 years old and I just bought my first Camaro, its a 1983 z28. I bought it off another kid who was building it as a project but let it go, and I received it as a big mess lol. right now I'm just doing some body work (filling and sanding) and soon I will get to the engine. i already have a rebuilt 350 block that's bored .030 over. i want to use a set of vortec head (do some porting work) and then pump some fuel injection in. plan to use a Weiand stealth ram intake, wiring harness and ecu from a 88 tpi. 32lb injectors, and not sure on what cam. this is going to be a street build with a decent amount of strip time as I will be using it for high school drag racing. I was just wondering from some of the experts here if I would be able to get into the mid 13s with this setup or close to 350-400hp at the crank. my car has a 700r4 in it and a 2.7something posi rear end which I plan to swap out for something a little lower. nitrous is not really an option for me as we are not aloud to use it in high school drag racing. any input form anybody would be of great help thanks.

Re: Kid with his first camaro

Welcome and congrats on the purchase.

A few things that will help those times is suspension. with 400hp crank you should be able to knock off mid-high 12's. My first Iroc was a Swapped 355 LT1, made 311whp. and ran 12.70s.

It had a 3.42 from a 91 Formula
Boxed Lower control arms (LCA's)
Hotchkis Subframe connectors
BMR Track Pack Torque Arm.

Nothing fancy but the car worked well. After swapping to a 383 LT1 it ran 11.70s with a 1.65 60'.

Obviously budget is everything when you are young. Look into "founders performance" You can get some nice suspension pieces to start you off and not break the bank on them. Also for budget I would suggest Jegster frame ties. I just installed a set on my new Z28 and have a write up in the aftermarket review section.

Have fun!

Re: Kid with his first camaro

thanks for the response. the car already has eibach lowering springs but I don't know if that would help at all. I guess im going to have to look more into suspension and then just building up my engine. would you happen to know it radial road hugger tires are any good?

Re: Kid with his first camaro

For any racing I always ran Mickey Thompson ET Street Radials. But on the street they get torn up quick. I have ran Hoozier slicks on my Vette before and they hooked nicely also.
