fiberglass top isn't that bad! i wanted to do that too! I wanted to paint the inside of the piece a color, like a blue like my car. I think that'd look awesome! But for now i'm going with Carpet and wood because of time.

Ok this will probly be a lengthy reply but here it goes.
If you want a fibreglass top on a wooden box (which is the easier method) then just build a 3/4 MDF box with braces or whatever. Then take chicken wire fence material or a similar bendable material that holds its shape, or any other similar wire product. Put a sheet much bigger than the box top and bend it to the desired contours and shapes then trim the edges appropiately. Remember to make it an a bit less than an inch lower so it will be the height you want it to be. Put your cloth down, coat it with mixed resin. Wait for it to try. Put Light resin coat and cloth ontop then some more resin. Keep doing this till you got your layers down. Make sure theres no bubbles cause they really weaken it. Then when you got desired layers, 6-8 or so, put a just resin layer on. This will give you plenty of space to sand smooth and get rid of imperfections before getting down to the cloth. You can also fill any nicks or imperfections with resin like you would if you were doing a job with bondo. Then you can primer and paint it, carpet it (personally dont like carpeted fibreglass, takes away the nice look) or vinyl it (dont like this look to much either.

A full fibreglass box would be a huge amount of work, but could be worth it if done properly. But if you mess up you will be kicking yourself cause its alot of work and money. Anyway, start by putting cardboard all down in the hatch. Coat that with petroleum jelly (vaseline, or ky jelly if your a kinky ****). Then you just lay your fibreglass, take it out and build on it. If you keep the carpet in and do cardboard like I just mentioned, that will let you put the resin and cloth layers on the outside because there will be the extra clearance due to the cardboard. If you take out the carpet and petroleum the metal up you would need to do the layers on the inside most likely. After all that is done you just build a top onto it as you would with the MDF. I forgot to mention, you can peel the chicken wire fence off if you want to, or leave it there. If you pulled it all off with no or minimal bubbles it would result in an ultralight, ultrastrong great looking full glass box. If you **** it up you will be regretting the hours on end it took to build it up that far. Ive left out some details just cause it would make an ultralong post if I went into full detail. There are also different methods of doing the full glass box, but thats how I would tackle it. If anyone wants more details or has questions just email me at moshonas@iprimus.ca or post your question here I would be glad to help. hopefully this will come in handy if anyone does a search in the future... Later
