Dashmat...

So, the time has come to finally put in this dashmat... the instructions say that sound "comes through fine" even though there are no speaker cutouts in the mat. Am I to assume that this is a load of crap and cut holes myself, or what? It seems ridiculous to think that a big thick mat laying over the speaker wouldn't have any significant effect on the sound waves...

(Note: I don't think I really need to even state the fact that I'd much rather have a replacement dash than a dashmat, but someone got it for me for Christmas and it's a temporary fix for my cracked dash, so it'll have to do.)
