multiply
height x width x depth = "X" cu/inches
Then divide "X" by 1728 and you get cu/ft.
To find inside dimensions, just subtract the thickness of the wood x 2 (since there are 2 sides to a box.)
for 1/2" subtract 1" from the overall width/height/depth accordingly.
for 5/8" subtract 1-1/4"
for 3/4" subtract 1-1/2"
Etc.
So if you have a box made of 3/4" wood that's 36" wide x 22" height x 18" depth, you'd multiply 34-1/2" x 20-1/2" x 16-1/2" = 11669.625 cubic inches. Divide that by 1728 = 6.75xxx cu/ft INSIDE.
BTW, the 1728 is the area of one cu/ft expressed in inches.
12" x 12" x 12" = 1728

12" x 12" x 12" = 1728
