Aftermarket HU problems

my friend has a '87 TransAm GTA with like premium everything. hes got the beefed up stereo and speakers. he bought an Alpine HU and was going to install it but upon taking out the old HU he found there to be many a wire to where he didnt know where it went. he said there is like a silver box in his dash that some wires go to/from. any suggestions on how to get this to work? thanks.

What does the silver box look like? Does it say anything on it? If he has the upgraded factory stereo with a sub in the back, some of the wires will be for that.

My buddies 1990 Chevy 2500 has one of those stupid things. It must be some sort of regulator/dispursion unit cause all the wires go into it and then to the stereo. Not really sure what it is though, but you can go to an audio shop and buy a harness' that will bypas it. Thats the hard part is finding a place that carries that part. If it;s the same silver box that my friend has, you can do a little "rigging" and bypass it, it;s just a HUGE PITA. Best of luck to you.

well... i dont know much about it. My friend seems to think its an amplifier because he has the premium sound and that came with tiny "subwoofers". i think they are 6" or something. but those came as an option. anyone else have this premium system?

its an 87, so it shouldn't control anything but the audio. it could be the stock cd changer control if there's a cd changer, but amplifiers that are stock would probably be in back, not in the dash.
