so it goes like this. i have this old advan 10 inch sub in my garage that my cousin was going to throw away. so i held on to it for some unknown future project. i also have a crapy cdrom drive size amplifier that puts out like 50 amps if its on crossover. now you know the backround.

so i am in my garage today, and i see that sub, collecting dust, sitting on top of somthing i wanted. so i pick up the sub and set it on the nearest object, a blue one gallon bucket. and then majic happened. it fit. well. i thought to myself, wow, if i could seal that it would be plenty of airspace.

so i busted out the duct-tape and let fly. first i wired all the stuff from the amp (in the bottom of the bucket, mounted with more tape. andran them to my cheap target deck(that suprisingly has a aux out) and wired up the sub, then i sealed it all in and pictured below is the love child that spawned from this unholy union...

Note: i have these hosted on cardomain, but i don't know how to link to images on a cardomain site. so i am uploading the images here. if somone could pm me some instructions that would be cool.

To add an image just go to your cardomain page, click the image, and when it pops up, right click the image and go to properties. Select the image location and copy it. Then when making a post you can either click the "IMG" button or just type without spaces or quotes "[ I M G ] http://www.host.com/image.jpg [ / I M G ]".

It'll sound better if you use a 5 gallon pail like you buy plaster in.

I don't think the typical 5 gallon pail is wide enough for a 15 to fit. I could see a 12" working though.

My buddy di that with a Radio Shack 6" sub with a Kraco amp pushing it....... Had it's own sound needless to say

That reminds me of an invention I made once........I was a delivery driver and the trucks we drove were the stripped out chevy work trucks.....I was on the road so much, not having a radio killed me. Soooo instead of getting a Jam Box, I had an older JVC pull out laying around. I took two of those removable speakers that you get for most home systems. I stuffed those into a duffle bag and mounted the radio to them. Ran the speaker wires and hooked up a cig lighter plug for power. THAT THING ROCKED!!!! I called it " The Bag of Beats". Totally portable to all of out other trucks ....... Till this day I wondered if I should have patent that thing!!!

I don't know anything about car audio (my tape deck doesn't even work), but I definitely like the duct-tape for it's ghettofied affect.

I like the mod. No one ever sees that area of the car, unless you show it off - so what does it matter how awful it appears aesthetically? Nice, cheap rig there man.

Anyway, seriously, I highly respect your work with the bucket. It looks so terrible, yes, but it's so mundanely/ingeniusly devised you cannot help but smile. I'd rather have that than the finest sub box - that thing just has character.

Just think about it, Ed Wood made what is arguably the worst film ever, "Plan 9 from Outer Space", and he's revered the world over as an eccentric idiot-savant! I think your bucket-sub will go down in the annals of history as the single greatest custom car audio rig in American history. Unholy union indeed!

To keep it thirdgen...not having enuf power will hurt a sub more than overpowering it...so you probably underpowered it and blew it. To get off topic a little...I did that for a friends truck..but I used 1/2 inch thick 12" round PVC that fit a 12 inch sub perfectly and I could actually screw it down into the PVC because of the thickness. Then I capped the end w/ a flat piece of PVC plastic and put a speaker terminal in the bottom. Besides the weird hollow type sound it produced (not by much mind you, but it was noticable), it worked great cuz he could still move his seat all the way back AND had room for 2 12" subs. The PVC was 18 inches (thats the length of all the bazooka tubes so thats what I went with) and he used a sony amp and subs. The best part was there was no limit to the depth of the sub!

Oh, BTW...keep the duck tape, and maybe wrap the whole bucket w/ it...it would be kinda like sound dampening material (I think, lol) :hail: :hail:

i did not know underpowering a sub was bad? i used to have a sony Induction Moulded Ployprophaleine(sp?) "IMP" 500 watt sub powered by a 10 year old kennwood 70 watt amp. i used it for two years in my charookie untill i sold it. maybe since it was such a nice sub it held up longer.

no i think i blew this sub with two much power, not to little. that is interesting information to know. now i know that if i ever get another REAL system going (only if i move somplace where i can fit my car IN the garage) i will not make that mistake again.

oh, is underpowering a sub the cause of hearing all the sound through the sub and not just the bass hits? with my most recent car audio adventure (yes the bucket) i could hear all the sounds, high low mid, through the sub. would getting an amp that could keep up with my sub fix that? or do i need some kind of filter?

If you underpower a sub then it has to work harder to do what it was made to do, and it will blow faster. The reason you were hearing everything through the sub is because chances are your amp didnt have a HP/LP (high pass/low pass) filter built in. It filters out highs or lows with the flip of a switch.That sub you were using probably had a 100 watt RMS minimum...it had to work hard with the power it had to make sound, especially highs and lows, and it probably burnt the voice coils. Is it crunchy when you push on the sub? But this is just what I've been told and gathered from common sense, so if im wrong someone correct me please.

wha t impendence ws the amp rated at & what was the sub? cheaper amp may have burn-ed up & sub still works.

yeah, underpowering something is not bad. what blows a speaker/sub when its underpowered is an uninformed installer (not pointing a finger at anyone). what people try to do is compensate for the low volume by cranking up the gain. thats when the problems start....

speaking of gain..... i would need to check, but i think mine was set to like 75% ......the fog clears...... i knew it was my own fault

After you replace the sub (yea. right ), before you put it in, pour about 2" of cement in the bottom of the sub and let it cure. It'll help keep the bucket from wobbling around. Plus it'll make the bucket less resonant.

Makes me think of something else too... we've all got our 80's boom boxes in the garage, right? Well I bet most of us also have old stereo equipment from our cars. A bucket sub would be right at home in the garage... plus if it gets in the way, you can grab the handle and Move it!

how's about getting a metal bucket and having it chromed (or using cheap chrome spray paint for those plastic buckets) for the true ghetto/bling-bling effect. hee hee hee ,or hey, why not use a kentucky fried chicken bucket to keep those subs lubed? might even taste good! please, somebody stop me!

my rigged system consists of stock HU with stock 4x6s .. no 6x9s(i cut the wiring harness outa them to wire in....), one $5 1980s yardsale house speaker tower( 8in woofer, 5in woofer, 3in woofer/tweeter) and one free from a friend pioneer IMPP 12" in a tube( no amp and wired into the right rear channel of my stereo). i wish my camera worked id send pics...



edit: oh yeah he gave me the sub-in-tube cuz its rated to 600watts max and he pumped 600 continuous thru it and cracked it.... rubber cement is so great

i just thought id chime in with me dos pennies.... but i say you should be an expensive bucket and like an audiobahn soundq aluminum sub and rig that combo up.......or you could try to get teh cheapest bucket... and try to blow the bucket thatd be great... put a small towel in the bottem of the bucket or maybe a shirt, some old underwear/ socks i dunno... definitley gotta use more of teh clasic grey duct tape.. remember "If You Can't Duct It F**k It..." or you could spray paint it primer gray

Cardboard sonotubes (for casting concrete footings) work good too!!!

And you can paint/carpet them as well!!!

(But the bucket is CLASSIC!!!)
