I thought it was broken at first... as the cd wasn't sucked in when I put it in the slot... but it turns out, it snaps in like a tape
lmao is that a headphone jack on it!?!?!?

road gear :a mechanical eject on a cd player, need i say more? alpine makes some pretty cruddy coaxs but decent to good head units , amps are not the greatest, either.

Actually, the heacdphone jack is an input. Would make more sence on a tape deck (for a portable CD player) but I dunno, you can plug your gameboy into it!

depends on what your lookin for.. i dun like alpine HUs i find them hard to work at the stores and thats after spend 30mins trying to change the bass and treble. their componets are pretty decently price but if you look for ones that can hold 100 watts rms with decent response you gunna pay thru the nose. and their subs dont get as low as id like...

Seems like it goes like this (always has and always will lol)

If it's new, you get what you pay for. No retailer will have something that is worth way more (aka "list price") and sell it for a lot less than that.

Even good brands like Infinity, Polk, etc. have $40 speakers... that suck!

I friend of mine has a THUMP! Amp. It is powering a couple 6x9's in boxes..

Its the cheapestly build amp I have ever seen.. it almost tops ol Urban Audioworks!

Funny thing, there is soo much heatsink to the amp.. it runs cold all day long LOL.

Do you own any of there stuff??
Sorry blaze1, I don’t own any of their stuff but I’ve worked on it. It's not good, it looks like they bought Jensen’s old stock PCBs and dropped them in their heatsinks. Even the SPL amp are built with low end parts down to the cheep PCB, generic outputs, flimsy VRs for controls, and…. You could build one out of parts right off of Radio Shack’s parts shelf (in-stock). Sorry, not to be an a**, but I’ve spent time inside of them (Oh the humanity).

Dude, just stay away from anything that sounds like a good brand:

Ie Boss (bose) Sherwood (kenwood) Rockwood (Rockford Fosgate/Kenwood)

Just about anything from the major electronics MFGRs will be better than the stock head unit in a 3rd Gen. I don't like Sony, Awia or Clarion (although their pro audio stuff is pretty slick), but it'll all sound better than stock. Same deal with speakers.

My experience has led me to buy pioneer speakers and kenwood head unit and subs. I may upgrade from my pioneers because they obviously are below the level of my HU, but they're way better than stock (although stock in my latest ride is a one speaker (paper) AM radio in my 78 Impala).

Also, whatI've gleaned in my experience with upgrading stereos in mid 90s and earlier American cars: Speakers are the biggest bang for the buck stereo upgrade. The paper crap in these rides sound like ****, and just get worse over time. Next is the head unit. Almost any quality brand is better than stock, but If choosing between last year's high end model and the newest Xplode , go for the quality unit. It never ceases to amaze me how discontinued Kenwood or Rockford HU can be so much cheaper than newer, crappier units.

Uh, cause some "stock" systems really kick *** now days although they are usually options. The Ford Mach 460 & 1000 systems rock, as do the Bose systems in Cadillacs and the Blaupunkt systems in some GM cars. I know that there's lots of good systems in imports now too, but I don't know anything about them.

However if you meant stock systems from any 3rd Gen, then yeah, they pretty much all suck.

The radio reception is bad. I'm not even sure why or how that's possible, but I had a weaker signal than the pile of crap cassette deck that was in the first car I put it in. Yes I checked the antenna cable. Twice. Cause I couldn't believe it. It also has the $h1ttiest amplifier I've ever heard. It starts distorting the signal at 70% of its gain. Believe me, it's pretty quiet; it should not distort anything at that low of a volume. SSL's stand-alone amps are pretty lame, too. They sound pretty good, but not good enough for their function, IMO. I had one that liked to overheat all the time, too, and it was sitting out in the open where my back seat used to be. Never again.
i got a sound storm stolen outta my first camaro, My problems werent as bad, but still pretty crappy. When ever you turn it off, listen to it with the car off then turn the car on ect, it would start the track over, not just start where you left off

Love Sony but their CD players **** me off. About a dozen Sony CD players have gone bad on me. Their motors tend to burn out, esp. in changers.
As far as longevity goes, Alpine CD decks have worked well for many years in a number of my installs.

I have heard many systems with "crappy" brand equipment that jammed. Install, design, and tuning is far more important.

I agree with the install/tuning comment. Good gear always helps though. Right now I consider all of my gear high end, so I will be putting my install/tuning skills to the test. It will be interesting to see what I can do.

The motors almost never go bad. If you still have them it’s probably the optical pickup. Most go for $15.00 to $35.00.

Sony just DOES NOT make a good optical pickup (nomenclature for the “lens” or “laser”). This is why you hear that their HU’s skip all the time. There junk plain and simple. Sony makes some good stuff. Their cameras are great.

As a technician, I would NEVER buy something form Sony that uses and optical pickup, NEVER.!.!.!.!.

Agreed.

From CD Burners and Computer DVD players, to 5 disc changers, to Car audio head units. They all suck at reading stuff if there is anything wrong with them at all.

I can feed my cheapo pioneer a mulched mangled disc, and it plays it happy as can be.

Mind you if there are super bad scratches, then of course it will not read or at least skip a few times.

Many stock systems, especially after 2000 have become pretty decent.

2000 and newer Sunfires have mids and tweets in the doors for example.

Many car manufacturers are seeing the need to have a decent sound system now. So many of them are starting to use brand name components in their systems. Infinity, Bose, Blaupunkt, Alpine and Pioneer are some of the common ones.

IMHO any brand that can sell a 500-1000 subwoofer with a magnet the size of a coffee coaster, or a 800w amp for 30$ is probably gonna rank amongst the best of the worst.
