Amp wiring.. guage ?'s
i was wondering what guage for the amp power wire i need becuase ive look around and some 4 gauge wires say one thing and some say another... im looking to go into the 2400 watt range for my amp and want to do it right the first time....
what about distrubution blocks and fuse blocks and what not. pretty much the only thing im sure about my app is my rcas.. lol
i guesss the basic ? is will 4awg wire be fine for 2400 watt rms amp or will my car be the next fire on the news

at 2400 watts i'd look into 2 awg. Its hefty, but its better safe than your car in flames. As for fuses, i guess a 100 watt after the battery would be fine, that how i run all of mine.

if it was 2400 max u could get away with 4 gauge but if its rms, you should look into a 2 gauge, or even a 0 gauge (if your up for running a wire the size of a garden hose down the middle of your car).
If your only running one amp you dont need a distro block, you need them when you want to distribute the power between two amps, for example i am running a 1500 watt and a 640 watt with a 4 gauge main wire going into the distro block, and coming out into 2 8 gauge wires.
Its not like you couldnt get away with a 4 gauge, but like you said, you want to do it right the first time, so go with a 2 gauge.
2400 max wattage - go with 4 gauge
2400 rms wattage - go with 2 or 0 gauge

If I were you I'd find out what fuse size the amp has before you buy your wire. That way you can buy the proper wire size.

on a side note. my friend has a soundstream refernceec500 or sumthing amp with a 60amp fuse... it looks like the shop that did his install used 8 guage wire( about the size of a pencil) is this the correct guage or no..

With an amp that has a 60 amp fuse, 4 AWG is required unless it's a very short run (like in a BMW where the battery is in the trunk).

yea i think the shop farger his intall up a il because his amp for no reason does this: you put the remote wire in and the speakers play for a second then dont play, the power light comes on as the speaks hit but goes out slowly even if you leave the remote in.
also they used like 8 gauge wire( again its about the size of a pencil) and when they ran it thru the firewall the didnt use a grommet
