Back 6x9's?
Since the day taht I had bought my car i was under the impression that there were 6x9 in teh back of my car by the passengers. Well it was not until today that i began to explore behind the panels to see the condition of the speakers when i came to find a 4in and another smaller oval speaker. Is this how they came stock or was this a custom crappy installation done on my car by the previous owner!

On the firebirds the bose system consisted of two 4" subs and two 4x6" speakers in the sail panels. They still used the stock dash 4x6" speakers up front. In camaros, the bose system consisted of a extra set of speakers in special kick panels and a extra set of 4x6" (I think that's the size) in the locking rear hatch cover.

Thanks cayse glad to be here. The camaro system wasn't any better than the firebird's, just different. I couldn't tell you why. To me they both sound equally well, except the firebirds had a better head unit. Just opnion

I am not sure if i want to remain with that setup or just replace them with 6x9s. If i did decided to remain with that system i would have to find the speaker plate for the left side, since it was removed before my purchase of the car.
As far as the kickpanels, i do not want to put anything down by my passengers feet. I am nor worried about them being on my side, but its when my brother, Girl Friends, or Moms foot goes through it!
When i do place speakers into the doors, i plan on doing 5" or 6"kenwood speakers and tweeters!

5 feet??
(hehe... edit your posts, will you??)
I would toss the Bose setup in the sail panels and go with 6" components (or a 6" sub if you can find one).

You can keep the setup but replace the speakers with some aftermarket ones. That's what I'm in the middle of doing, but to each his own. I guess it also depends on the style of music you like

Lie to her and tell rap will rattle the car apart
I like classic rock, anything from the '80's in particular. I thing that using the BOSE templates and upgrading the actual speakers will give the car a real full sound. Chose the right speakers and it should be smooth sailing from there

80's music pwns...... although i find that i listen to diff music depending on whos in the car with me too... i think that my system set up a lil diff would be really ull sounding (ie kickpanels instead of lazy dash mounting)

do you know anywhere that has the BOSE templates, because i am missing the template and speakers on the left side. When i got the car (from an impound lot) there was a ox that filled the whole that was lined in foil. Can you guess how the car got impounded!

Try www.thirdgenusa.com. He often has those components. Ebay is also a popular source(that's where I got mine). Good luck.

There was an external amp it fit in the middle underside of the dash just above and to the right of the head unit

guess it would be a good time to take that out... because if its meant to run on 10ohm loads or 8 or what not then it won't be sufficient for new speakers.... unless you use the same ohm speakers as the original bose, or if you remove half the number of speakers.... I believe the original ohms were at about 4, right? because each speaker was 8 or so, I bet that amp was a 4-channel, and there were 2 speakers per channel

Bose systems are pretty unique and it isn't normally possible to change out any components unless you replace them with bose stuff. I would completely bypass the entire system if you're going with new speakers. If the amp still works you could sell it. I've seen those things sell for quite a bit on e-bay before. You can then add new amps to your speakers and replace that 15 yr old audio wiring with newer stuff.

yup that's a really good idea, you might even be able to sell the old bose for enough money to buy a brand new 5/6 channel amp! (wishful thinking)
What I've always wondered, is the bose PLACEMENT any good? The 6inch woofers in the hatch area, the kicks, dash and side 4x6, and 6's? or does some of that sound start to mix and sound bad??
I know that with the original bose system, and a few other cars I've been in... they specifially block certain sounds... for example in my friends '00 camaro, with the crummy monsoon system, the middle speakers, that are right next the the rear passengers, are almost inaudible, they play only medium to deep bass... and the speakers in the hatch area play louder vocals and such... they clearly have done some work somewhere to even out the sound... if you were to just replace all the speakers with new(say 3-way coaxials) you might all-the-sudden have strange highs and mids coming from spots there were never intended...
eh, I really don't know, but I have always like the idea of having more speakers.

Bose is pretty well known for "lifelike" sound reproduction. There systems are always high quality, but I really think they are geared more toward people who like classical music. The way the market their products, the way they explain their products, and the placement/size of their speakers seem to lean toward that. I mean, c'mon 4" subwoofers??????

hrm does the bose system have the 4" subs in the sails, or just the ones in the hatch area? I think there are two systems I am mixing up... the TA system and the premium bose system...

The firebirds have 4" subs in the sail panels along w/4x6's. The camaros have 6x9 in the sail panels and 4" subs on the security hatch cover in the back

are these one-way 6x9's in the sails? Because that seems like it would work better than the firebird setup
plus the subs are in the rear so the bass will be deeper

Yes the stock 6x9 will be one way for a stock system. I believe the bose stock system would be too. Keep in mind, the people at bose were masters at creating air channels and ports called acoustic channels to make their speakers sound better. I've personally never heard a intact bose system in these cars operate, so I can only speculate.

I've heard that they had alot of problems with the monsoon systems. Stock systems keep getting better, in the 70's and 80's they were kind of bad.

Maybe someone swapped out the kickpanels? I'm almost positive that sail panel setup is from the factory Bose option.
