What would you do in this situation (sub sizes)?

I finally am finishing up my stereo. I'm removing my 6x9"s and putting either one or two 10" or 12" subs in my trunk. I'm getting component 6.5"s for the front within a few months, but my sony 6.5"s are good enough for now. I have a 300W amp available for the sub and I hooked up my brother's Sony 12" sub and it wasn't bad. I'm building the box to sit across the two ledges at the bottom of the rear well. I also listen to more rock/indie/metal so I'm looking for strong low end and low mids. With musical tastes, box size, location, lack of 6x9"s, price, and wattage in mind, what would you reccomend for how many, sizes, brands, etc. Thanks!

P.S. I'm really hoping to just get one sub if possible, anyone have first hand experience with changing from 1 to 2 subs?

Based on your style of music, I would suggest two 10's or even 3 8's. Smaller subs respond more quickly and accurately to things like rapid bass drum beats.
Why are you taking out the 6x9's?
