What are the best subs for the money?

I had a system hooked up a Sony Xplode 1200W amp with 2 12" reference series subs. It wasn't even close to what I was expecting. Now im lookin for great sounding subs for my system. I am looking for 2 12's under about 400$ for both of them. If someone could help me that would be great, thanks.

emphasis on getting loud, sounding good, or a combination of the 2?

could you list you entire system, including electrical? planning on keeping that sony amp? i can guarantee it doesnt do 1200 watts rms, and would not power most any 200 dollar subs to their potential.

i paid 220 each for my 12's, and i put over 1000 watts rms to EACH.

edit - this is what im using if you're curious.

dont let the rating on this fool you, thats 2 ohms and 13.8 volts, i run mine at 1 ohm and 14.6 volts, and its been tested at over 2700x1 rms.

I want louder it dont have to sound the best but i want it loud. Im runnin 0 gauge wire with a 1 farad capacitor. Im just gonna get the subs now and then get an amp when i get the money. I've looked at kickers and others but I dont kno what to get. I only got a little 45x4 panasonic head unit.

a pair of kicker l7 12's would probably be about what you're looking for. i would avoid the alpine type r's, they're good for ported boxes, but suck sealed.

edit - if you're a decent box builder, maybe even a pair of 15's.

for a mix of being loud and sounding good at the same time Memphis has some pretty good subs in their line

memphis makes some nice stuff, but IMO its a bit overpriced for what you get. i think he'd be happier with the l7's than what he'd get from memphis in that price range.

my rl-p's are sound quality oriented, but can go loud if you have the box and can give them the power.

true, Memphis is a bit pricey but i'm more than satisfied with mine. custom box is on it's way so no more baffle board!

yes, quite a difference, if you have the power.

for low power applications, like if you're keeping the sony, go with the l5's. if you can give them 700-1000 watts RMS each, go with the l7's.

im not positive about this, but i dont think kicker honors warranties for online sales. cheapest place is going to be car audio forums.

i hope so! it's gonna look better too. i'll have a hidden Z28 logo that can only be seen thru a mirror that will be mounted on the box. sorry for hijacking the thread.

Kickers are good too

thats wonderful. if i so desire, i can shake the house down the street, set car alarms off a few houses away. but i have the sense to keep my **** down in residential neighborhoods.

surely RE Audio SX12's (resonant engineering) would be the sub of choice? They're reasonably priced and go LOOOOOOUD (+almost indestructable) if power isn't available a SE12 wil sound sweet while going loud. The solobarics have a tendencey of inverting the rubber surround at the corners which cant be good for life span of the sub!!

sx's would also be a good choice, but they're more like 300 a piece.

hehe, I wanted a cheap stereo in my tercel so i got one of those 1200w sony's and the RMS on them are pitiful, something like 250w And they wont peak anywhere near 1200w on a good day. Same with the sony subs 1200w RMS is only about 300 on them, i bet even if they took a 1200w hit they would blow right out of the box

Ok, enough bashing sony's garbage. Lets hear some good stuff, i may be in the market for a stereo upgrade one of these days!

my kicker S15L7 is pretty sweet. I finally got a kicker kx1200.1 to do it justice.

I've heard (maybe polecat can clarify this), that the kicker solo's do best in ported boxes? I did my 3.3cube box for my last car, sealed, and it was quiet, put in dual ports and it really woke it up. Now i'm doing a fiberglass one for the TA, and will do it ported (hopefully with a better box for it.)

Got the sub on ebay, smokin' deal at the time.

Well i got my first listen to Kickers new CVX's, Im rather impressed. Id definately go CVX over the square subs, they still get loud but had much better SQ (I know you arent too concerned about that). Also, I have heard alot of people complain about L5s reliability.

Im sorry, I forgoot to mention, I am not sure how they will sound sealed, both I heard were ported. And they hve a Qts of .35 I believe

yes, L7's shine better in ported applications, as where the new CVX's, will hanlde the same power, and do better overall sealed.

its easier just to post the cardomain site instead, pics are of the old car, system is being transplanted into my "new" 86 trans am, I wish the box was fiberglass but I didnt wanna spend the money, (closer to I didnt have the money and still dont lol)
