When I was 14...it hurts to think about it....but i took a deep cycle boat battery and a charger and had them hooked together in my room. It worked good. BUT now being wiser and older i realize that a battery is a bad thing to have inside any house. I have seen a few explode since then and can only imagine the damage and wounds it would have caused had it gone off indoors. If you are REALLY REALLY wanting to do this safely you need a power supply. The only problem is, to find one that'll work for subs would probably cost the same as a used car or a nice home amp.

The battery must have a good charge, use a small wire to jump the B+ over to the 'Rem' input. START WITH THE GAINS ALL THE WAY DOWN. If he wants to use the home CD players line-outs, it's going to be loud even with the gains down. Bring them up slow. Don't put the battery on carpet or charge it inside. He will be fine.

I would do it the 'right' way and invest in a power supply. The problem is that you're going to have to use a relatively small amp to be able to power it off a power supply. You're going to be limited to around 20-25 amps in a house unless you install a dedicated breaker.
