Regarding amps mounted in the rear seat back

I found some threads where some of you had (or was in the process of) mounted your amps in the rear seat backs. It may be a stupid question - but does this leave your rear seat completely useless?
I was thinking since building a box inside the seat back requires that you remove quite a bit of foam, maybe it would just get too hard to lean against?

Not that it is very comfy back there in the first place though..

Thanks to anyone who can shed some light on this.

I did the rear seat amp install last weekend and yes the seat does feel a little harder when your back is up against it but its not like sitting with your back up against a hard wall. Everyone does the install a little different so there really is no 1 good way to explain the process to you. you just have to get in their and see what you got to work with. I made a tray for my amps to sit in and then cut out the plastic backing just smaller the then box and screwed the two together. Plus some amps are taller then others which will require more form to be removed. I would highly suggest finding a spare back seat and messing around with it before you go and cut up your good one. I bought a spare set of matching split rear seats here on the boards and used them. I still have my orignals tucked away in case I want to go back to stock.

Thanks man!
Good to hear that. I've been thinking of getting a spare - but unfortunately it is near impossible to find any 4th gen seats over here. Guess I'll take some time to think before I decide whether or not Im going that route.

I never noticed anyone ask about the amp cooling. Looking at the back seat installs, there really is no air to cool it whatsoever.

Shouldn't that be a concern.

the cooling issue boils down to 2 things, first being the type of amp(s) used and how much strain is being put on them. Some amps cool better then others and some have fans built right into them like my Kickers. The second is the actual setup design in the back seat. Some guys choose to put plexiglass over there amp(s) and others like me just leave them open with a little bit of space around them. Basically, it gonna be a trial and error thing. What works for one person may not work for another.
