reception question

I have an 1989 formula 305 recently purchased, low mileage and all stock. I have the original head unit in it (I like stock). the reception (FM) is really bad. I removed the radio and checked the antenna plug and it is tight. I also traced the black cable to the antenna (fixed) on fender and all is well. I also tried a different OEM head unit and get the same issue.

What in the world could be causing this? Is their some aftermarket (radio shack?) thing I can plug in the back that will help the reception? like a booster?

thanks.

May try an FM Booster. Had same problem in my ol '90 Chevy 454 SS, just went to Radio Shak and got a little $20 FM Booster that tapped in the antenna lead and it REALLY helped out. Just a thought though.
