Please help.

Axle/Gears: huh?? guessing stock.
two options... First buy the install kit that bolts to the car and then the HU fits into it. drawback is that the HU will stick out about an inch to 1.5 inches in front.
Second option and the way I did mine... Your HU is hitting the ducting for the center console vents that blow at the front of your seats right under the stereo. I took a drill and drilled the crap outta the ducts inside the console so that I could remove about 2 inches of them and then put a layer of FG over the openings so air wouldn't blow into the back of my HU. that gave me enough room for my HU to slide all the way in like it should and sit flush with the console..

Like a few have mentioned, to get the deck to sit nice and flush, you will have to trim the vents a bit in the back. However, it will look much better than the standard install kit.
Another bonus (which saved my stuff a couple times) was that when you use the flush mount kit, you can lay a dummy face over it to look like a stock radio when the face is removed.

in mine there was a metal bracket behind, i just muscled it back as far as i could and it sits pretty nice in there
and they do make those lit ones for third gens but i could think of a lot more things to spend $72 on

I almost completely forgot about that bracket. I ended up pulling mine out. the console was no less rigid without it.
oh, and found some pics of the setup with the flush mount install kit
