Possible Idea...

I've been building a sealed well box for my soon to be purchased 10" subs in my '86 TA. The usual way of installing the speakers is face up towards the hatch...what about facing the "hump" in the back (The angled piece of MDF area). My thought was this, mount the speakers from the inside of the box such that when they "jump" they won't hit anything (like the car). I've seen setups similar to this where guys will just lay thier boxes face down in the car to pick up that hard thump as aposed to loud music (obviously there are several factor to consider when doing this, crossovers, amps, magnet size, etc..)

Just wondering if anyone has tried it out there...plus this would in a way protect the subs from stuff hitting them in the cargo area.

Later,
Corey

(Also, has anyone wired up an amp to the gain control in the dash before?)

Let me see if i undestand what you're saying... the usual way is installing the subs at an angle towards the back of the car, and you want to know about facing them towards the front of the car... is that right? well first in my opinion there's no set way to install your own system, it goes however your mind takes it... second if most people set their subs towards the hatch rather than the front "hump"? then there are a lot of us including me that aren't like most people...

Sorta, perhaps I didn't clearly explain. Either facing them forward or backward your still facing them (more or less depending on angle) towards the hatch window (ie skyward). My idea was to mount them facing the gas tank area...literally up against the hump wall from within the well itself. I've read some other threads talking about facing them down into the well before, but none that talk about facing the actuall from side of the well.

I hope this makes more sense. The basic idea would be to cancel out more of the high freq through natural cancellation PLUS the speakers would be completely protected from the sun, stuff in my back, and hopefully a-holes who want to steal them!

Re: Possible Idea...

ok, yes that makes sense... I have heard the idea, although i have never seen it personally. Supposedly it works but it just depends on the size of the subs you're using, at the top is the biggest of course, but i'd say just take a measurement... I get what you're saying on the cancellation, but i'm not sure how it would actually sound... you'd think theoretically that if it would cancel high freq that it would also cancel the low freqs and thus the boomy sound... and with space issues, i'd imagine the sub wouldn't be rated that high for max or rms so if you start small and basically muffle it, what are you going to be left with...?

more or less a decision for you to make...

i had an idea for a "natural" looking box. I haven't takin measurements because of my box i already have in, but i was thinking of setting the subs as far down as possible into the well, and instead of building a box that sticks way up, build one around them in the bottom. have it stretch all the way across and lay carpet to make it look stock-ish. Of course the outcome would be anything but stock lol.

If necessary with your ideas of your personal things hitting it (but my box is at the top so i currently dont even use it) and a*holes seeing/trying to steal them. I'm sure you could build a thicker carpeted piece of wood and just have "fin" like supports to place it on... instant elimination, that could eliminate the high freqs...

that's just my idea. feel free to ask if you have any questions about your idea as well as mine if you think i could answer.

Re: Possible Idea...

Well, after consulting with the local audio guru in my home town (I live about 45 mins from my TA currently!) He suggested against my idea for several of the same reasons BUT did say if I had any extra MDF it wouldn't be a bad side project just to test. I picked up a couple JL Audo 10's at a killer price (not the high end ones), also not the exact speaker I wanted but I couldn't pass on the price and figured if they sound ok or good, then I can advance down the line.

So, my subs are pointed to the sky and I plan on carpeting the top of the box with one solid piece of stock carpet from the back down to the back seats for an oem look (I think similiar idea to yours). Once I cut out for the subs and shut the deck you can barley see them (I chose to sit them as far to the rear as possible) When I add tinting or my old louvre back on (or both) they should almost invisible.

Re: Possible Idea...

I was always under the impression that what you are contemplating was called loading. Bazooka suggested doing this. It somewhat raised the efficiency of their subs (tubes). Also I have a home sub that is loaded. It is actually firing down and out the only opening . Looks almost like a port but there is no tuning. I have no complaints. Most home subs mention firing the speakers into a wall or corner to get a better response. Hope this helps.
