I had my antenna shaved because it did close to nothing in the first place, but now I decided I want radio. I looked it up in my Chilton and it's pictures were pretty useless and so was the description considering I know nothing about my radio. I was looking around for universal antennas, but even then I don't know how to hook it up. Anyone know what I should do?

 

hooking up an antenna is fairly simple if you're not getting a powered/amplified one. If you've got a factory GM radio, you will need an adapter though (can be found at any part store). Some people have had good luck putting a standard "whip" antenna underneath their dash cap and run the cable to the deck.

The end that connects to the radio will look kinda like an RCA end (the red/white/yellow connectors you have on your dvd player at home). it just plugs right into your radio.

 

So does that mean I have to do anything to my dash?

 

You don't have to do anything to the dash except to remove the dash pad to place the antenna under it. Then replace the pad. The wire runs down through the center of the dash alongside the defroster ductwork to where the radio is at.

 

So should I just get a universal antenna and feed the wire down to the radio from the dash and hook it up?

 

That's what I did. Use a regular antenna though. I used one of those universal "hideaway" antennas that are designed to slide down into a the A-pillar or fender and I don't get very good reception with it.

 

You could use a factory antenna/base from a 07 Pontiac vibe and mount it on the roof near the rear hatch. All the parts you need could be had from your GM dealership.

I found my antenna cable, but it is taped to another, much thinner, cable that runs up my passenger side fender and under my hood. What is that?

 

Ok, this isn't working at all like I thought. I bought an antenna cable because my old antenna cable was cut. So I have adapters, universal antenna and an antenna from an 09 dodge ram, but I can't figure out how to hook the antennas up to anything because nothing has threaded ends to screw the antenna into. Any help would be great right now while it's apart.

 

it shouldent be threaded it should just push into a spot in the radio

 

The spot that pushes into the radio is like that but the antenna itself is threaded, so I guess I need part of the antenna mount or the antenna assembly OR SOME KIND OF ADAPTER?!


EDIT: In case I was not clear, it is connecting the actual antenna itself that I am having trouble with...

 

Yes, the antenna cable threads onto the base of the antenna mount and then the antenna threads onto the mount. At least, that is how GM and older Dodge antennas are connected. I imagine the newer Dodges are similar. You might be able to thread the antenna cable directly into the bottom of the antenna using a piece of threaded rod or a screw with the head cut off.

I just hooked up a universal rubber ant. from my local auto parts store. The connections did not fit tight so all I did was connect them together and taped it up. It works fine!

 

I don't know how much clearer I can get. I don't have the antenna mount assembly anywhere to change it from the female AUX end of the antenna cable to the threaded female/male end of the antenna.
