1986 firebird sound system
I have a 1986 iroc that I am driving now. It has the factory am/fm system.
I also have a parts car,,1986 firebird with a lot better sound system,,,i think.
What do you think? It has 2 speakers in the back seat/sail panel. Looks like a 4x6 speaker same as the ones in the dash,,and, a 4 or 6 inch round speaker below it. It also has a button and slider "gain" on the dash above the a/c panel,,,what is "that" for? Does it maybe have an amp in the car? The system is all stock, but it is missing the actual radio. I have a cd/mp3 player that I will install in my car. The speakers in my iroc are 6x9's in the back,,sail panel.
Im not building a 'good' sound system; I just have 'free stuff' in the parts car and I wonder if they are any better than what I have now. Thanks for your suggestion.
BTW the cd/mp3 player that I will install "says" 45 watts per channel @ 4 channels and it has line-level outputs. IF; there is an amp in the firebird, should I install it in my iroc?

Someone else will give a better response but I can tell you that you have most likely have a factory Bose stereo in your Firebird. If so there is an amp in your car somewhere, not exactly sure where. Do a search for bose stereo.

Re: 1986 firebird sound system
i found one of those setups on an '84 trans am,i think
that was only avalible on firebirds-rear speaker setup
had a 2-way 4x6 speaker with a long throw woofer of
about 4 1/2" in a tuned, ported enclosure in the sails
instead of the normal 6x9s.A seperate small amp of
around (i'd say)15-20w powered the woofers,i thought
i heard somewhere those woofers are of a special low
impedance(ohms)of 1/2-1 ohm much like bose speakers
I've never heard one of these systems, but i,d say those
speakers are too small to really rock,so i'd use 6x9s

Re: 1986 firebird sound system
What you have in the 86 Firebird parts car is the UQ7 sound system. This was the premium sound system in the Firebird (85'-89'). It does have a small amp under the dash near where the map pocket is. The amp powers the small 5 inch subs in the rear sail panels. There are 4 x 6 inch speakers are above them, and two 4 x 6 inch speakers in the front of the dash, so its a 6 speaker system. The system is designed to work with any of the GM factory stereo radios of the era: the UM6, UM7, UX1, and the top of the line UT4. It *will not* work with aftermarket stereos. Assuming the special wiring harness have not been hacked and are still with the parts car, you have everything you need to do a transplant into your Camaro. Be careful pulling the sub boxes, they tend to break easy. The GM radios pop up of ebay often. Also, it's not uncommon for the foam surrounds on the tiny subs to deteriorate, after all they are over 20 years old. They can be repaired. I did it to mine, here's a link for the suppiles. http://www.simplyspeakers.com/15refoaming.htm
