system meltdown........

I'm in the electronics field but I don't work with audio equip much.maybe some experts here can clue me in on somthing here,...what exactly happens when the volume is accidently left at full throttle (vol. level 35 on my radio)on a system consisting of an "Alpine CD player 4v pre out,Alpine 12V(thats the model name) 75x2 amp, kenwood 6x9"s" your probably thinking " what kind of moron would do that!!??" ,my friend and I were on a road trip, cutting through the rockey mountains,we climed altitude faster than our ears could ajust. as I kept turning it up in small incriments like I always do.after an estimated 5 min I realized I couldn't hear ****. I looked down and to my horror, bright orange digits showing the uncalled for "35" ,max volume on a system that I never really needed much more than "4-13" 13 was really loud. ever since that incident, my stereo sucks. I bought new speakers for the rear today (Blaupunkt 75 watt RMS,seperate sub coil.). I set my amp to low pass at 80Hz with just the "sub" coils hooked up(what subs?), it sounds like crap, then I hooked up both coils in parallel, still sounded like crap,I think I should at least get some sort of realistic bass from these things.they don't even sound as good as the battered kenwoods I just took out. can my amps be f#cked too or do these Blaupunct 6x9s just suck? after the "mountain incedent" I lost most of the most of the bass fidelity at higher volumes,I could still compensate by increasing the gain and bass dB dials, the new Blaupuncts seem to not even attempt to throw bass. bass drops that would have rumbled the through the car when the system was new, now just cut out like it wasn't even recorded on the CD.
I soldered the "sub connections" so I only tried them with both coils for full range, but how could that be the problem? I'll be dammed if I go out there tomorrow and find out they work fine with just the "full range coil" basically my question is :what gets damaged from that and how?

ive found that amps usually shut off when they are running too hot, and a couple minutes of a "35" volume level will tend to make the amps hot. my guess is that the head unit is the onet that has fouled up becuase you said that the whole system sounds like crap. Now if you have amps runnin all those speakers then the amps may be damaged too. I would get the deck checked out 1st, then the amps. also the speakers have most likely been melted or blown. so u should replace if not all of them(speakers minus the subs). the subs should be fine cuz when they blow, you should be able to hear them blow.

thanks dan, I found the faulty unit today just by using the spk wires that I had before I bought my amp. without the amp it sounded much better, the old kenwoods don't even sound too f#cked up! I'm going to try and trade the new Blaupuncts 6x9s for a nice amp, they just don't match the acoustics of my car at all. then I'll have my Alpine amp repaired under warranty at circuit city, their incompetent circuit techs are sure to replace every board in there for me.
